There is a reason cats have fascinated humanity for thousands of years. They move with grace, confidence, mystery, and an undeniable sense of sovereignty. They seem to exist between worlds—both deeply connected to us and entirely independent at the same time.In ancient Egypt, these qualities were embodied by one of the most beloved goddesses of all time: Bastet.Today, many spiritual seekers are rediscovering Bastet as a guide for healing, intuition, self-love, feminine empowerment, and protection. Her energy reminds us that strength and gentleness are not opposites. They are partners. She teaches us how to protect what matters while still embracing joy, beauty, and pleasure.
Who Was Bastet?
Bastet was one of the most important goddesses in ancient Egyptian spirituality. Originally depicted as a fierce lioness, her image gradually evolved into that of a domestic cat or a woman with the head of a cat. This transformation reflects one of the greatest lessons Bastet offers us.There is a time to fight. There is a time to nurture. There is a time to protect. There is a time to rest.Bastet embodies the wisdom of knowing which energy is needed in each moment. She was worshipped as a goddess of:

Protection

Fertility

Motherhood

Joy and celebration

Music and dance

Healing

Intuition

Sacred feminine power

Home and family

Her temple city of Bubastis was known for festivals filled with music, laughter, dancing, and devotion. Unlike many spiritual traditions that emphasize suffering, Bastet reminds us that joy itself can be sacred.
Bastet and the Sacred Feminine
Many women today are healing from generations of conditioning that taught them they must constantly sacrifice, give, and care for others while neglecting themselves.Bastet offers a different path. She teaches us that self-care is not selfish.Rest is not laziness.Pleasure is not weakness.Boundaries are not unkind. In many ways, Bastet embodies the healthy Divine Feminine. She nurtures those she loves, but she does not abandon herself. She loves deeply, yet maintains her sovereignty. She protects her family fiercely while honoring her own needs. For women walking the priestess path, Bastet serves as a powerful guide in reclaiming self-worth, confidence, and personal power.
The Symbolism of the Cat
Cats were considered sacred in ancient Egypt because they protected homes from snakes, rodents, and disease.Spiritually, cats became symbols of:

Intuition

Psychic awareness

Independence

Mystery

Protection

Spiritual sensitivity

When Bastet appears in your spiritual practice, she often encourages you to trust your instincts. How many times have you ignored your intuition only to realize later that it was right?Bastet reminds us that our inner wisdom is one of our greatest gifts. She asks us to become still enough to hear it.
Working With Bastet Today
Modern practitioners often connect with Bastet through meditation, journaling, altar work, and sacred ritual. You may choose to honor Bastet by:

Lighting a candle in her honor

Creating a small altar with cat imagery

Spending time in joyful movement or dance

Journaling about boundaries and self-worth

Practicing intuitive development

Offering gratitude for the blessings of home and family

Her energy feels warm, protective, loving, and empowering. Many women report feeling a deep sense of comfort when working with Bastet—as though they are being reminded that they are already enough.
A Meditation Journey with Bastet
One of the most powerful ways to connect with a goddess is through guided meditation.Meditation allows us to move beyond intellectual knowledge and experience the energy of the goddess directly. In Episode 108 of The Spiritual Sanctuary: Wisdom for the Divine Feminine, I guide you through a sacred meditation to connect with Bastet and receive her wisdom, healing, and blessings. You can listen to the meditation here:Podcast: https://www.bertena.org/en/podcastFind a quiet space, close your eyes, and allow yourself to step into the temple of Bastet to discover what message she has for you.
Ready to Study the Goddesses More Deeply?
If Bastet's wisdom speaks to your soul, I invite you to join me for Goddess Studies: A Year-Long Priestess Training in Divine Feminine Wisdom. This virtual training explores a different goddess each week throughout the year.
